I gripe about living in London a lot. I talk about being homesick and how weird it is over here (the rain! the weird words! bah humbug!). But some days I think it is really cool. Today was one of those days. Every once in a while the staff of MPs get invited to receptions. I usually do not go but every once in a while one sounds too good to pass up. Tonight I went to support my friend who was nominated for an award and the reception was in the Speaker’s State Rooms. The Speaker of the House lives on the premises of the Palace of Westminster and has both State Rooms and a personal living space. We got to go to the State Rooms and see the room and bed that the royals sleep in the night before their coronation. We stood around talking with other staff members having drinks and canapes, looking out the windows at the river, surrounded by portraits of previous Speakers, one of the original copies of the Magna Carta and the beautiful ceilings that I have come to expect from palaces in Europe.
So yes, sometimes London is weird. But sometimes it is awesome.
